Daniel Martinez   Daniel Martinez is currently working in Dallas, Texas under the name of Special Finishes of Texas (Plano, Texas), a home remodeling and marble, granite, and tile installation business.  Martinez is a likable, well dressed man who makes a good impression.  He may represent himself as a general contractor or as an Interior Designer. He is neither. His experience is mostly as a mural painter and painter of faux finishes.

In our job, he demonstrated a significant lack of skill in the basic trades (carpentry, drywall, cabinetry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, etc.) and in planning. He constructed a few things in a way that would have caused "expensive and hard to repair" future problems if we had not corrected them. He always had quick and credible sounding explanations ("everyone does it that way now") that someone without building skills might believe. In one instance, he knowingly lied about what he had done "behind the wall".  It was a code violation.

He spoke about his company, his driver, etc., but we found out that his "company" was only him. He had a day laborer, but we could tell they hadn't worked together much.

You will see on this website which contains information from several homeowners, he is not above running away with clients deposits or advance payments if he needs money. He is not above changing terms in the middle of projects with threats that he will walk off the job and leave the home in chaos. He knows how to run. He has no traceable place of business, no website, no employees, no bank accounts, no credit cards, no credit with building material suppliers in the Metroplex.  In one case described here, he left the country.

His actions were so egregious, we felt obligated to provide a place for people to share their experiences, both good and bad, openly and with fairness.

Julie H
August 2018

Daniel apparently had an urgent need for money and didn’t mind turning my life upside down to get it. I'm a 60 year old professional woman with a Masters Degree. He left with my cash advance and left my home uninhabitable after 5 days.

My job (4 small projects) was well documented in a six page project plan that he agreed with. He asked for 33% up front and agreed to specific progress payments at the completion of each project. He wanted to start right away and before we had all the materials. I didn’t understand why at the time, but looking back, it was all about getting my down payment.

On the first day of the job he didn’t have any money to buy incidentals and wanted me to get on the phone every time he went to the store to share my credit card with the cashier.  Keep in mind, I was purchasing all the significant materials myself. His purchases were all minor ($50 - $75 dollars). I had to agree to write a check every week to reimburse him, even though he had a 33% advance.

The first week was very trying. He had a different attitude once the job started. Every task was a challenge. It took three days to move an electric water heater so that he could tile underneath it. The wall switches were put on the wrong wall. The fireplace frame was off-center by 5 inches. The drywall repair was recessed a ¼ deeper than the adjoining wall. He cut off a plumbing vent pipe (the one that went through the roof and vented to the outside) and floored over an open and active pipe. He drove 15 miles to pick up 65 large porcelain tiles and he come back with 21, 16 of which were broken.

Most of the work that he performed had to be re-done because it was wrong. At every juncture he would get angry and blame someone. It the case of the hot water heater, first he claimed the the hot water heater was broken (it wasn't),  then my plumbing was connected to my neighbor (it isn't), and then he didn't have and couldn't get a hose.

After the first week, with about 15% of the work done, and the house torn up, he sent me a text on late Sunday night demanding an additional advance by morning (37% more) or he was not going to come back to work. He wanted to collect 80% of the contract when only 15% of the work had been done.

When we met early the next morning. He smelled of alcohol. He then told me, that even with a payment, he would only work 5 more days because he had another job. I tried to negotiate a reasonable endpoint so I could move on and he could move on. He knew had me in a vulnerable spot - no water, house unlivable and he held his ground. He didn't even offer to reconnect the plumbing. He kept some of the supplies I purchased.

This whole experience has been very stressful and heartbreaking.

Carolyn Medlock Be careful using this guy.

Carolyn Medlock This guy is a thief and is now dodging the law. He says his address is South America. Yet he works in the Dallas area and had multiple addresses. DO NOT USE THIS GUY FOR ANY SERVICES. IF YOU KNOW OF HIS WHEREABOUTS, PLEASE POST. THANK YOU!!

Diane Ganter Pike What happened?

Carolyn Medlock He defrauded us out of thousands of dollars to finance a trip to South America. We have no real address to serve him court papers. He is defrauded the court system by saying he lives in South America. He has done NO work. Claimed we needed to purchase the counter tops before he started work so he could select tile, etc. Said he had a 'turn key' business but never provided options to view his 'turn key' items. Claimed he was an interior decorator. Claimed he has been in business 30+ years. Address on record somewhere near Houston, TX, he claims he no longer lives there. He is guilty of NO LESS than criminal activity.

Work Description: Reinforcing a beam, tile work, dry wall and reforming pony wall.

Comments: We were rather unsatisfied with Daniel's work. He only finished the pony wall and started the beam and one tile job. He finished non of it. Created more holes in existing walls and applied my tile crooked without finishing it either. He breached his contract, took our money, and quit via text 4 days in. We don't recommend him at all and his work was half a**.
